The role of purpose in the long-term development of a company
Companies need to generate economic value but also need to address the needs of customers, employees and other key stakeholders. In recent years, the notion of purpose has emerged as a way to help coordinate different stakeholders’s perspective. Asset managers and other investors are now pushing for an increasing role of purpose in the firm’ strategy and asking boards of directors and CEOs to be more explicit about it.
Professor Colin Mayer has written a recent book, Prosperity (Oxford University Press, 2018) that discusses the historical role of purpose in European companies and its impact on the quality of corporate governance. He and Professor Jordi Canals will discuss about this important topic in corporate governance.
